The chairman Paul Clark opened the meeting by welcoming everyone to the meeting and announcing that tonight’s speaker would be Andrew Greenwood the chairman of Macclesfield A. S. who would be presenting a discourse on Mars (now readily available in the evening skies) entitled “Mars observations through the ages”.
Andrew mentioned that we would see images during his presentation from Mars Global Surveyor, all downloadable from the Internet.
He then started to take us through the history of observing mars.
3000bc the Egyptians noticed mars retrograde motion and referred to it as “the red one” or “the one that moves backwards.
1200-300bc the Greeks called it Ares and explained its retrograde motion.
Andrew then explained the other landmarks in the history of observing Mars by many notable astronomers and scholars of their day including the contributions by Aristotle, Aristarchus of Samos, Ptolemy, Nicolaus Copernicus, Tycho Brahe, Johannes Kepler, Galileo Galilei, Fransisco Fontana, Christiaan Huygens, Giovani Cassini, Giacomo Maraldi, William Herschel, Angelo Secci, Giovani Schiparelli, Percival Lowell and George Ellery Hale.
We then had a break.
When we resumed the meeting took the minutes as read, then we had an update on the Stockport sky beam.
The Secretary then went through the post received and thanked everybody who helped with the evening at Delamere Forest Park.
The Chairman then noted that the web site had been slightly updated and if you wanted to start Blogging to contact Mark Crossley.
The Observatory Director then gave his report: The clubhouse is in a bad way, the wooden hut had been broken into again and the Observatory and 14” scope are in a poor state.
It was then mentioned that perhaps the society should look into the possibility of giving up the observatory site as well as the meeting room and rent somewhere else every Friday, possibly the Methodist church or Scout hut.
It was decided we would look into the lease and other possible venues.
The meeting was then brought to a close.
